When there are multiple drugs in competition for binding to plasma proteins, there can be different concentrations of free drug present for each drug being administered. Where this occurs, it is important for clinicians to take into account the plasma binding of the drugs prescribed to a patient, in order to prevent an overdose of one of the other drugs, and to elicit the intended effect from the new drug.
